OverviewOnce you have driven the roads in this far, it's a fairly easy hike to the summit.
Getting ThereSee main page.
Route DescriptionHike the road into Lines Canyon just south of Turtle Springs on the USGS topographical map. Your route will be evident as you look into the canyon: (1) a long ridge coming off the main range, (2) a sloping ramp going up and to your left to a (3) saddle below Peak 6,597. The summit is the next peak over to the left (partially hidden from view).
Hike up steep slopes to gain the lower ridge. Dodge prickly-pear and loose rock. Once on the ridge the slope moderates. Hike up toward an obvious hill. Turn left and now hike up the easy grades uo the ramp toward an obvious point below the saddle.
The route to the saddle is very steep, brushy and loose but is short (300 feet) and goes fast.
Once on top, climb up and over Peak 6,597, then down its north side (brushy, rocky) to a low point. From here it's 500 more vertical feet up brushy slopes to the summit. Figure 5 miles round trip (not counting extra road walking you may do).
Beware "submerged rocks": the slopes are all loose rubbly rocks. Each step needs to be taken carefully so that you don't slip or twist (or break) an ankle. From the road to the top is about 2,100 feet.
Essential GearLong pants and gloves. Trekking poles would be excellent to help with balance and probing for snakes.
